The war in Athens is over. Yet, even in the aftermath, the horrors continue as King Tereus assaults his sister-in-law Philomela in an act of passion. In a story of tragedy, empowerment, and triumph, Philomela and many female victims of the war use their experiences as a platform to speak out, an idea that led If We Were Birds to win the 2010 Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding New Play. Philomela’s and the other women’s stories strike a contemporary chord as a great number of women share their stories and speak for women’s rights.
